A pal you can explore with, battle with,
and customize… but how exactly?
More on that later.
Feed with candy box…
Soon after we were settled that we were going in the right direction with Om Nom, we knew we had to figure out how Om Nom’s Cardboard Box would fit into the game— and what the game loop would be…
DESIGNING OM NOM
I had the honor of designing a lot of the features in the Cut the Rope Add-on, including Om Nom, the candy-obsessed creature, your new friend!
In addition to costumes and accessories, Om Nom can transform into several new forms, granting him incredible abilities to aid the player in their world!
This way, players can make their own puzzles, include these blocks in their homes, machines, or just play with them!
Unused content, and why you won’t see it… yet?
We had a few varying ideas on what that could look like.
We ideated on in-game physics to simulate traditional Cut the Rope gameplay, puzzles leading Om Nom through challenges, until eventually landing on minigames.
Minigames, what are they?
Great. We landed on Minigames— but how does one design a Minigame, and keep it fun. That fell to myself, our founder Mike, and
lots of testing from our team.
But first, I had to ideate what the games were.
Phew… Now what’s my reward?
We love the fact that we can make custom blocks. When we began working on CTR, it was fairly new, and it was the first time we would make an add-on that could take full advantage of full block sets.
What Does Om Nom Even Do?
Pretty early on, we wanted Om Nom to be your ultimate mob pet and to offer plenty of opportunities to interact for the player and Om Nom.
We had lots of ideas, but not all of them made it in. For example, we originally wanted Om Nom to mimic mobs with fun animations and sound effects. Some of which actually got made until we decided to scrap the feature entirely.
I remember saying I wanted Om Nom to feel like you were playing with another player entirely…
Blocks. Let’s Talk About Blocks.
Items, Attachables, and Any Loose Ends…
Alright, let’s wrap this up with everything else remaining!
We wanted fun weapons and tools for players to play with
Additionally, some minigames required lots of attachables, so let’s take a look at some of them!
So now that you’ve seen most of what went into bringing vision from verbal for the Cut the Rope Add-On, I must tell you something important.
That isn’t everything I made for this Add-On; in fact, we had 8 minigames planned at one point, but I can’t show anything from the other 4, not yet, at least. Depending on how well our Add-On performs, we want to update CTR and bring more of our shelved ideas to the full release, but in the nature of game development, updates are never a guarantee.
One day, everything I worked on will become public, and I’ll update this page when that moment comes, but for now
Consider supporting our efforts, check out the Add-On, and please have an amazing time playing with Om Nom. I love him, and I hope you do too
